Headless Shopify Development with Hydrogen

Senior engineers building headless Shopify storefronts with Hydrogen, Shopify's headless toolkit, on React Router or Next.js, with Shopify keeping the catalogue, checkout and orders. We tell you first whether headless is worth it for your store, because for many brands a well-built theme is the better answer.

How we build headless Shopify storefronts

  1. Decide if headless is right. We compare a headless build with an Online Store 2.0 theme against your actual requirements: content complexity, performance targets, the size of your front-end team and how often the storefront changes. If a theme does the job, we say so and the project ends there.
  2. Design the architecture. We choose the framework and hosting (React Router on Shopify Oxygen, or Next.js on Vercel), the CMS, the search and the analytics, and document how data flows between the Storefront API and each system. Checkout stays on Shopify, so payments and checkout security remain Shopify's responsibility.
  3. Build the storefront. Hydrogen handles the Shopify parts that are easy to get wrong, such as the cart, variant selection, collection filtering and analytics, while the framework handles routing and rendering. We build server-rendered pages for SEO, wire product, collection and cart data through the Storefront API, connect the CMS, and set up preview environments so every change can be checked before release.
  4. Launch and hand over. We redirect any changed URLs, check structured data and Core Web Vitals on the new storefront, launch in a low-traffic window, and hand over a documented codebase your team or ours can maintain.

What's included

  • A written headless or theme recommendation for your store, before any build commitment
  • A Hydrogen storefront on React Router or Next.js, using the Storefront API and Customer Account API, with server rendering for search engines
  • CMS integration for editorial content, with preview environments for the marketing team
  • Hosting on Shopify Oxygen or Vercel, set up with preview environments and continuous deployment
  • Shopify checkout kept in place, so payments, fraud checks and checkout updates stay with Shopify
  • A documented codebase and handover, so the storefront is not tied to one agency

Headless build timeline

12 to 20 weeks

A typical headless Hydrogen storefront takes 12 to 20 weeks, depending on the number of templates, the CMS and the integrations. We confirm the window in writing after the architecture stage. Content migration and design sign-off move the date more often than the build itself.

FAQ

What is headless Shopify?

Headless Shopify separates the storefront from Shopify's theme system. Shopify still runs the catalogue, inventory, checkout and orders, while a separate front end, for example a Next.js or React Router app using Hydrogen, renders the pages and reads data through the Storefront API. It gives full control over the front end, at the cost of running a codebase of your own.

When is headless worth it, and when is a theme better?

Headless is worth it when the storefront needs content and interactions a theme cannot handle well, when several front ends share one catalogue, or when you have engineers to own the code. A theme is better when the store mainly needs speed, conversion work and easy merchandising. Many brands that ask for headless are better served by a faster theme.

What is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is Shopify's headless toolkit. Since the 2026-10 release on 14 October 2026 it is framework-agnostic: it adds Shopify commerce, such as the cart, variant selection, collection filtering and analytics, to frameworks that render on the server, including Next.js, React Router, Nuxt, Astro and SvelteKit. It covers the Storefront API and the Customer Account API.

React Router on Oxygen or Next.js on Vercel?

Shopify provides two starting templates: React Router 7 deployed to Shopify Oxygen, and Vercel Shop, a Next.js 16 template deployed to Vercel. Oxygen keeps hosting inside Shopify; Next.js on Vercel suits teams that already build in Next.js or run other sites there. We recommend one after the architecture stage, based on your team and existing stack.

Does checkout change on a headless Shopify store?

No. Customers still check out on Shopify's checkout, so payment processing, fraud checks and checkout updates stay with Shopify. You customise checkout the same way as on any Shopify store, through checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions, some of which require Shopify Plus.

How do you protect SEO on a headless storefront?

We build on frameworks that render pages on the server, so search engines receive complete HTML. We keep or redirect existing URLs, output canonical tags, sitemaps and structured data from the new front end, and check Core Web Vitals before launch. Most SEO problems on headless builds come from missing redirects and client-only rendering, and we design both out.

Which CMS works with headless Shopify?

Hydrogen works with any CMS that has an API. Sanity, Contentful and Storyblok are common choices, and Shopify metaobjects can hold simpler content without a separate CMS. We pick based on who edits the content and how much structure it needs.

Can we add Hydrogen to an existing Next.js or React site?

Yes. Since the 2026-10 release, Hydrogen is designed to add Shopify commerce to a stack you already run, not only to start new projects. Your framework keeps routing, rendering and UI; Hydrogen supplies the cart, variant selection, collection filtering and analytics against Shopify's APIs.

Does headless make a Shopify store faster?

Not automatically. A well-built headless storefront can be very fast, but so can a well-built theme, and a poorly built headless site can be slower than both. If speed is the main reason for going headless, a speed audit of the current theme is usually the cheaper first step.

Can we go headless on BigCommerce instead?

Yes. BigCommerce's reference headless storefront is Catalyst, built on Next.js. If you are choosing between platforms as well as front ends, we compare Hydrogen on Shopify with Catalyst on BigCommerce against your catalogue, integrations and team.

How is a headless Shopify build priced?

As a fixed scope, quoted in writing after the architecture stage. The quote depends on the number of page templates, the CMS, the integrations and whether you also need a design. We include ongoing hosting and maintenance costs in the proposal so you see the full cost of running headless, not only the build.
