Shopify Checkout Extensibility Development

Senior engineers building Shopify checkout customisations the supported way: checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions for discount, delivery and payment logic, branding, and web pixels for tracking. We also move stores off old checkout.liquid code and script tags.

How we build checkout customisations

  1. Inventory your checkout customisations. We list everything that changes your checkout today: checkout.liquid edits, additional scripts, script tags, apps and tracking tags. Shopify's checkout customisations report in the admin is the starting point, and we check it against the live checkout because reports miss things.
  2. Map each one to a supported method. Each customisation is mapped to a checkout UI extension, a Shopify Function, checkout branding, a web pixel or an existing app, or retired if nobody needs it. Some targets depend on your plan: extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps need Shopify Plus.
  3. Build and test. We build the extensions and Functions in a Shopify app, test them against real carts, discounts, shipping rates and payment methods on a development store, and check accessibility and mobile layout, since checkout changes affect every order.
  4. Release and monitor. The app is released as a versioned deployment you can roll back. After release we watch conversion, checkout errors and tracking events, and confirm that analytics and ad platforms still receive purchase data.

What's included

  • A full inventory of your checkout customisations, checked against the live checkout and not only the admin report
  • A mapping of each customisation to an extension, Function, branding setting, web pixel or app, with plan requirements stated
  • Checkout UI extensions for content, fields and offers in checkout and on the Thank you and Order status pages
  • Shopify Functions for discount, delivery and payment rules that standard settings cannot express
  • Web pixels so analytics and ad platforms keep receiving checkout and purchase events
  • A tested, versioned release you can roll back, plus post-release monitoring

Checkout project timeline

Set after the inventory

The timeline depends on how many customisations you have and how many need custom extensions or Functions rather than settings or apps. We confirm it in writing after the inventory. Stores with many years of checkout.liquid edits need more time in the mapping stage.

FAQ

What is Shopify checkout extensibility?

It is Shopify's supported way to customise checkout, now called Shopify Extensions in Checkout. Instead of editing checkout code, you add checkout UI extensions for content and fields, Shopify Functions for discount, delivery and payment logic, branding settings for the look, and web pixels for tracking. These survive Shopify's checkout updates.

Is checkout.liquid still supported?

No. checkout.liquid is unsupported for the information, shipping and payment steps. On the Thank you and Order status pages, checkout.liquid and additional scripts were sunset on 28 August 2025. Script tags on those pages were sunset for Plus stores on 28 August 2025 and for other stores on 26 August 2026.

Do I need Shopify Plus to customise checkout?

For some changes. Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are available only to Shopify Plus stores, and custom apps containing Shopify Functions run only on Plus. On other plans, stores customise mainly through Thank you and Order status page extensions, checkout editor branding and web pixels. We check your plan before designing anything.

What can checkout UI extensions do?

They add content and inputs at defined points in checkout: banners, custom fields, delivery instructions, gift messages, product offers, surveys on the Thank you page and review requests on the Order status page. They run in an isolated environment and only see the checkout data Shopify exposes to them, which keeps the core checkout under Shopify's control.

What do Shopify Functions do in checkout?

Functions run your own logic inside Shopify's checkout: custom discount rules, hiding, renaming or reordering delivery and payment options, and validation such as blocking an order that breaks a business rule. They replace logic that older stores ran in checkout scripts.

Will our tracking still work after the upgrade?

Only if it is moved deliberately. Tracking code in checkout.liquid, additional scripts and script tags no longer runs on the sunset pages, so purchase events must come from web pixels or a server-side integration. We list every tag in the inventory and confirm each one fires after release.

What replaced Shopify Scripts?

Shopify Functions. Shopify Scripts were sunset on 28 August 2025, and custom discount, shipping and payment logic now runs as Functions inside the checkout. Custom apps that contain Functions run only on Shopify Plus, while App Store apps with Functions work on any plan.

Where do I see which checkout customisations my store has?

The Shopify admin includes a report of your current checkout customisations, with guidance on how each maps to Shopify Extensions in Checkout. We use it as the starting point and check it against the live checkout, because tags added outside Shopify settings can be missed.

Can checkout extensions be translated for international customers?

Yes. Checkout UI extensions can be localised, so text and formatting follow the buyer's language and currency. For stores selling in several markets we build translations into the extension from the start rather than adding them after launch.

How is checkout extensibility work priced?

As a fixed scope, quoted in writing after the inventory. The quote depends on how many customisations need custom extensions or Functions rather than settings and apps. Some stores only need a short mapping exercise and configuration; others need a custom checkout app.
